12/06/2009Netherlands gives EUR 1 million to Pakistani refugees

An extra EUR 1 million in aid money will be donated by the Netherlands who is concerned about UN organisations’ lack of speed in helping refugees.

The Hague – The Netherlands announced an extra EUR 1 million in aid money for Pakistan Thursday and expressed concern at UN organisations' "lack of speed" in helping refugees.

Development Minister Bert Koenders expressed concern about some two million Pakistani refugees who had fled the northwestern Swat Valley region after clashes between the Pakistani army and Taliban fighters.

"I also have concerns about the lack of speed of UN organisations in helping people," the minister said in a statement.

Oxfam said earlier that aid agencies in Pakistan may have to stop working due to a funding shortfall and warned of a "humanitarian meltdown."

"Given the dramatic situation, I am willing to make available EUR 1 million to the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide support via her sister-organisation, the Red Crescent, on the ground," said Koenders.

The Netherlands has already contributed EUR 1 million in aid via the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Why doesn't the Dutch Government allocate a similar amount for the Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka after the government eradicated the menace of the terrorists there ? After all, Sri Lanka was a former colony of the Dutch wshere as Pakistan was not. Why such discrimination ?

Hope Taliban or Pakistani people wont use for funding more terror attacks.
