THE HAGUE - Dutch Health Minister Ab Klink has decided to implement a total ban on hallucinogenic mushrooms, known as magic mushrooms.
The new measure which will come into effect on 1 December replaces an existing law banning the sale of dried mushrooms and now includes fresh mushrooms and the cultivation of 182 varieties of hallucinogenic fungi, reports Trouw.
De Volkskrant writes that the lower house called for a complete ban after a 17-year-old French tourist jumped to her death this past summer after taking magic mushrooms. The French tourist's suicide was one of a number of deadly incidents involving tourists and magic mushrooms last summer.
The mind-altering fungi are freely available in smart shops in the Netherlands.
The minister wanted to introduce the ban before the summer, but this proved impossible because the bill still needed the approval of the Council of State, the most senior government advisory body.
Smart shops owners say the problem is confined to foreign tourists and can easily be solved with better information. The association representing smart shops – stores which sell magic mushrooms - has expressed disappointment and said it would take legal steps to prevent the ban.

First, the loss of prostitution windows, then the smoking ban, then the ban on selling alcohol in coffee shops and now they are banning the magic mushroom. Since when did the christian coalition take over your country? I hope for the sake of the country, the Dutch take their country back from the religi-facists that we are trying to marginalize here in America.
Does Ab Klink and the city councils realize that they are cutting off their noses to spite their faces? These people are economic fools! Just when the world is going into a recession, they are trying to shut down their economic engine. Folks, when people are down is when people look to places like A-DAM for fun to get their minds off of the crap in the world. Now Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands will just be another less free socially engineered nannie state. Throwing the baby out with the bath water is no way to govern. What ever happened to the dutch phrase translated to english, "The soup is served hotter than it is eaten."? Apparently cooler minds aren't prevailing.
globalization............ soon we will be inundated with starbucks.....ripoffs and real criminals in charge of cannabis way to go holland lets be like America
they look like they really know what they are doing maybe we should privatize jails and arrest all smokers hmmmm sounds like a plan
That's bloody ridiculous. I thought Holland was one of the few countries that had it's head screwed on when it came to drug policies. Not wanting to sound harsh, but if someone commited suicide while on mushrooms that's no reason to ban them. How many people a year take mushrooms and don't commit suicide? How many people a year commit suicide after drinking alcohol?
