19/11/2008Minister to decide on cafes defying smoking ban

The Dutch health minister will meet with the Dutch catering trade association Wednesday to discuss how to deal with bars and cafes that are ignoring the smoking ban.

19 November 2008

THE NETHERLANDS – Dutch Health Minister Ab Klink is to meet with the Dutch catering trade association on Wednesday to discuss on how to proceed with Dutch bars and cafes that are ignoring the smoking ban.

The organisation which represents hotels, restaurants and cafés has found that an increasing number of bars and cafés are defying the ban which was introduced on 1 July.

The organisation wants the minister to take a decision on how to proceed. They say the government should either enforce the smoking ban strictly or scrap it entirely.

Resistance against the ban is reportedly spreading rapidly across the Netherlands. Last weekend, café owners in the southern city of Den Bosch agreed formally to put their ashtrays back on the tables.
