16/11/2008Minister postpones plans to open Dutch borders

The Dutch Minister of Social Affairs, Piet Hein Donner, has decided to postpone plans to open the Dutch borders to Romanians and Bulgarians in 2009.

16 November 2008

THE NETHERLANDS – As a result of the financial crisis, Romanian and Bulgarian workers will be required to apply for a work permit to work in the Netherlands until 1 July.

Donner also wants to wait and see whether measures against bogus temping agencies are working.

The postponement was requested by the major Dutch cities.

However, Donner also wants city councils to help fill around 20,000 job vacancies in the agricultural sector, which desperately needs migrant workers.
