Coffee-shops selling marijuana will be relocated from the city centre to borders of Belgium.

19 November 2008

MAASTRICHT - The city council of Maastricht in the southernmost part of the Netherlands has agreed to the removal of marijuana-selling 'coffee-shops' from the city centre.

In the recent months, there have been increasing problems associated with people crossing the border to buy marijuana in the Netherlands.

The coffee-shops, where small amounts of the drug can be bought, will be housed in three 'coffee corners' on the borders of the borough. These are already under construction.

A number of neighbouring Belgian authorities are threatening to take Maastricht to court if the marijuana trade starts to affect their boroughs.
