03/07/2009MPs want prince off national bank's board

Several members of the lower house of parliament suggested the prince should stay away from 'controversial matters' after the collapse of Icesave in 2008.

The Hague – Members of the lower house of parliament have declared that Crown Prince Willem-Alexander should give up his position on the supervisory board at the Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB).

DNB has recently run into criticism because of the Icesave affair.

Thousands of Dutch savers suddenly found they were not able to access their money when the Icelandic internet bank collapsed in 2008.

The Dutch central bank had given Icesave an AAA status.

A majority of MPs said the prince should keep away from such controversial matters, although he has held the position for many years. In response, the government information service said the supervisory board is not responsible for monitoring the financial sector.
