08/09/2008Houses in Utrecht too costly for first-time buyers

Young professionals starting their first jobs in Utrecht are unable to buy their first house in the city.

8 September 2008

First-time house buyers who wish to settle in the central Dutch city of Utrecht are finding it impossible to purchase a house due to the high cost, reports Nrc.next.

Young professionals and people coming to the city to start their first jobs cannot make the move from rented student flat to their first house.

"The famous gap between rental and home ownership isn't a gap in Utrecht: it's a Grand Canyon," says one housing expert.

She complains that homes in a suitable price bracket have simply not been built. "That is really bad news not just for Utrecht, but for the whole of the central Netherlands. You've got to let these people into the city. They're the future."
