The Groningen pub who converted its storeroom to a bar and its former bar area to a smoking room is legal: Dutch Health minister Ab Klink.

GRONINGEN – A pub in Groningen has found an ingenious way of getting around the smoking ban by moving its bar to a storeroom and designating the main bar to a smoking area.

The pub has moved its bar and serving staff to a small storeroom and converted the former bar area to a smoking room.

Health minister Ab Klink said he is unable to take action against the Groningen pub as there is nothing in the law to prevent the pub’s move. The regulations specify that the area where drinks are served has to be larger than 35 square metres and the pub's storeroom meets this criterion.

The ban, introduced July 2008, states that all pubs have to be smoke free or have a separate area for smokers so that bar staff are not subject to the dangers of passive smoking.
