27/02/2009Five Turks, four Americans killed in plane crash

Nationalities of the nine victims of the Amsterdam plane crash were revealed by Dutch mayor.

AMSTERDAM – Five Turks and four Americans were killed in the Turkish Airlines jet crash in Amsterdam, Dutch mayor Theo Weterings said Thursday.

"We can inform you about the nationalities of the nine victims. They were five Turkish and four American citizens," Weterings, mayor of the Haarlemmermeer municipality under which Schiphol Airport falls, told a news conference.

Three of the Turks were crew members.

The Boeing 737-800 jet that crashed into a muddy field short of the runway Wednesday morning was carrying 135 people in all and not 134 as initially reported, said Weterings.

There had been 60 Dutch and 51 Turkish nationals on board the flight, as well as seven Americans, four Iranians, three Britons, two Syrians, and one passenger each from Germany, Bulgaria, Finland, Italy, Taiwan and Sudan.

The nationalities of two have yet to be determined.

The Finnish foreign ministry has denied one of its citizens was aboard the ill-fated flight, saying the person whose travel documents were found at the crash scene was safely at home.

Weterings said 63 people remained in hospital by Thursday evening, six critical.

"The identities of the deceased will only be released once the next-of-kin have been informed," the mayor added.
