08/07/2009Dutchman arrested on Swiss-German border

Man was carrying eight envelopes of EUR 50,000 each.

Konstanz – A Dutchman carrying EUR 400,000 has been arrested on the Swiss-German border.

The 60-year-old man had no luggage and told customs officers that he had been visiting a girlfriend in Switzerland.

The man had eight envelopes on his person, each containing EUR 50,000.

Customs officers reported they believe he is the same man that crossed the border a few days earlier carrying the same amount of money.

Last month, deputy finance minister Jan Kees de Jager reached an agreement with Switzerland to relax Swiss bank secrecy laws.

The agreement is due to be signed within the next two months.

Once enacted, the Swiss authorities will pass on any information about suspicious money transactions to the Dutch tax office.
