07/05/2009School sued over student forced into prostitution

The school is being sued for its lax policy on truancy which resulted in a teenage girl being forced into prostitution from the age of 12 to 16.

ZWOLLE – The mother of a girl who became the victim of forced prostitution as a teenager is claiming EUR 74,000 compensation from her daughter's former school in the eastern town of Zwolle.

Lucie Mosterd is accusing the school for failing to notify her of her daughter Maria Mosterd’s truancy. The school, Thorbecke Scholengemeenschap, failed to provide a safe environment for her daughter, and did not operate an adequate policy on truancy, added the elderly Mosterd.

From the age of 12 to 16, the teenage girl was enmeshed in a world of rape, violence, human trafficking and drug smuggling after she was befriended by a loverboy – a Dutch term for a for a young pimp who seduces teenage girls in order to force them into prostitution.

It was three years before the school alerted truancy officers.

Maria who has since published a book, Real men don't eat cheese, on her four-year ordeal, claims teachers were aware she was in trouble and that there were other girls from the school who were working as prostitutes.

Ernst Muller, the lawyer representing the Mosterds, confirmed the legal action following a report in the regional newspaper De Stentor.

“We blame the school for not having a secure environment for pupils. This pimp came into the school grounds and sometimes even into the school itself,” Muller was quoted as saying in the Telegraaf.

Maria is appealing for eyewitnesses to come forward in support of the legal action on her website.

from the age of 12 to 16 during this time did the parents ever attend the school ie parenting meetings ?
How was her behaviour at home ?
Whilst i agree the school seems to have behaved with no interest to their childs well being , however what about being a parent does it stop during school hours?
