09/06/2009Dutch minister opposes drug tests at middle schools

Dutch Youth and Family Minister André Rouvoet is not in favour of voluntary drug tests at middle schools.

The Hague – Dutch Youth and Family Minister André Rouvoet is not in favour of conducting drug tests at middle schools as he feels it is an invasion of pupils' privacy.

The minister was responding to a proposal by Rotterdam Councillor Ronald Geluk who called for all middle schools in the city to be supplied with urine testing kits so voluntary drug test can be conducted.

While the minister is unable to prevent the proposal from being implemented as it a voluntary scheme, he said he does not support the drug test as it was not up to schools’ responsibility to monitor students’ drug use.

Instead, the leader of the Christian Union party is in favour of drug education programmes.

Meanwhile, Trouw reports the police want to make it legal to make children as young as 12 years old to take a breathalyser test should they be suspected of drinking alcohol.

While the justice ministry has yet to comment on the proposal, a child psychologist interviewed by the paper pointed out introducing the tests may have an opposite effect as children may ‘think it is exciting to dodge them’.
