27/04/2009Dutch lesbians unhappy and unhealthy: survey

As compared to their homosexual counterparts, lesbians are more prone to depression and insomnia.

THE NETHERLANDS – Lesbians are found to be unhappier and unhealthier than heterosexual women in a recent survey.

The survey, conducted by UpsideDown Foundation that fights for the acceptance of lesbian and bisexual women, has found that lesbians are more prone to depression and insomnia.

More than a third of the 2,000 women questioned said they were often the target of insults and gossip. Women in younger age groups reported more incidents.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Ronald Plasterk has officially launched the Femme 2009 competition for the FemFusion Foundation.

The group aims to provide a more comprehensive picture of lesbians and bisexual women in society.

In Plasterk’s address, he said "we only live once, and let's have everyone, men and women, leading the life they want to lead, and especially enjoying love and sexuality.

"There are still women and men who for years don't dare admit they're lesbian or gay just because they may not be accepted by those around them. Successful, strong role models can help support lesbian and bisexual women," he added.
