10/06/2009Dutch hotel chains take foie gras off menu

Against force-feeding geese or duck in order to fatten their livers, Bilderberg, Carlton and Mövenpick are taking foie gras off the menu.

The Netherlands – Hotel chains Bilderberg, Carlton and Mövenpick are removing foie gras dishes from the menu in their Dutch hotels because it is cruel to the animals.

The chains told animal rights action group Wakker Dier (Alert Animal) that they too are against how geese or duck are being force-fed so liver paté can be obtained.

The group has been campaigning for a long time against the production and consumption of foie gras.

The pate is produced by force-feeding geese or duck in order to fatten their livers. The process has been outlawed in the Netherlands, although it is not illegal to consume foie gras.

Other chains, such as the mid-market Van der Valk restaurant chain, are keeping foie gras on the menu.
