26/11/2008Dutch MPs say no to Bulgarian, Romanian workers

A majority of Dutch MPs are against opening the country’s borders to Bulgarians and Romanians from 1 July 2009.

26 November 2008

THE NETHERLANDS – A majority of Dutch MPs want to deny Bulgarians and Romanians access to the Dutch job market for a further three years.

Coalition parties Labour and the Christian Democrats are against Social Affairs Minister Piet Hein Donner's decision to open the country's borders to Bulgarians and Romanians from 1 July 2009.

The Socialists, the conservative VVD and the far-right Freedom Party PVV have also opposed to the minister’s decision, citing the economic slowdown and housing shortages in the Netherlands as key factors.

While Romania and Bulgaria have been EU member states since 2007, their citizens still need work permits to take up legal employment in the Netherlands.

The Dutch can keep their restrictions till the day of The Last Judgement; it won't make any difference as the Romanians and Bulgarians are not interested to work over there. And why should they? The weather is awful, cold, grey and windy; the food has no taste, the language is difficult to learn and the people unfriendly.
