Travel guide Lonely Planet has listed Antwerp as one of the top 10 cities for visitors.

16 October 2008

BRUSSELS – Antwerp has been listed as Lonely Planet’s list of top 10 most interesting cities in the world for 2009.

The international travel guide publisher writes that Antwerp has a rich history and the port is city is the most underrated tourist destination in Belgium.

Lonely Planet says: “Few places offer such an appealing mix of classic and modern features.

"Eclectic art nouveau houses right next to neo-classic villas and medieval castles provide a fantastic backdrop to the many bars and pavement cafés.”

Other cities which are in the top 10 list are Beirut, Chicago, Glasgow, Lisbon, Mexico City and Sao Paolo.

Each year, Lonely Planet publishes a top ten of cities that are worth a visit during the coming 12 months.
