03/08/2009Amsterdam Pride ends with minute’s silence

The 14th Gay Pride in Amsterdam ended on Sunday evening with a minute's silence to commemorate the victims of Saturday's anti-gay shooting in Tel Aviv.

Amsterdam – The 14th edition of Gay Pride in Amsterdam drew to a close on Sunday evening with a final celebration staged at the city hall and opera house.

At six o’clock visitors held a minute’s silence for the victims of the shooting at a Tel Aviv gay club, where on Saturday evening a man dressed in black opened fire, killing two people and injuring at least thirteen others.

The Gay Pride organisers released dozens of pink balloons with rainbow flags as a mark of condolence. The rainbow flag is the international symbol of the homosexual movement.

The week long Gay Pride celebrations in Amsterdam featured exhibitions, debates and film screenings as well as exuberant partying. The traditional climax was Saturday’s parade of more than 80 boats along Amsterdam’s canals. Participants ranged from celebrities and scantily clad dancers to politicians and soldiers in uniform.

A record 560,000 spectators lined the canals to watch this year’s parade.
