27/06/2009Alternative sites considered for CO2 storage

Environment Minister Jacqueline Cramer and Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven have agreed to investigate alternatives to the town of Barendrecht as a CO2 storage location.

The Netherlands - Environment Minister Jacqueline Cramer and Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven have agreed to investigate alternatives to the town of Barendrecht as a CO2 storage location.

Royal Dutch Shell wants to store CO2 gas from its Rotterdam refinery in exhausted gas fields beneath Barendrecht.

The cabinet favours the idea as in step with its climate policy, but the local council and inhabitants of Barendrecht are fiercely opposed. The mayor is calling for the procedure leading to storage to be halted.

The two ministers are allowing the procedure to continue but are no longer convinced that Barendrecht is necessarily the right choice of location.
