06/10/200875 percent of Dutch homeowners worried

A survey by the Own House Association shows that three-quarters of Dutch home owners think they will suffer from the credit crisis.

6 October 2008

AMSTERDAM -- A survey by the Own House Association revealed that almost three-quarters of Dutch house owners think they will suffer from the credit crisis. The two most common fears are higher mortgage rates and lower house values.

The association estimates that a quarter of the owners are "potentially vulnerable" to increased interest rates and lower property value, but notes that they won’t necessarily suffer from these problems.

The survey also showed that almost half the house owners believe that the government should do everything it can to help the housing market if major problems emerge.

"The association estimates that a quarter of the owners are "potentially vulnerable" to increased interest rates and lower property value, but notes that they won’t necessarily suffer from these problems."

So please tell us why "The association" doe not think that home owners will now suffer from increased interest rates and lower property values!

This would have been a 5*****star rated article if it had only followed up on this item. Therefore, I sincerely ask that the Expat editor would kindly re-edit this article and add back this missing piece of information. As far as I can see interest rates have increased in the last two months by almost 30%! And houses have completely stopped selling due to buyers distrust of changes upward in mortgage interest rates.

I really don't see how interest rates especially (which is ultimately linked to lowering, maintaining, or raising of property values) can be halted without Dutch Banking intervention.
