03/07/200931 swimmers saved by coast guard

Police in The Hague warn of dangerous sea conditions and urge swimmers to use caution.

The Hague – Members of The Hague coast guard saved 31 swimmers on Wednesday afternoon after they ran into difficulties near breakwaters on the coast.

A combination of receding water and north western airstreams caused a strong current along the breakwaters which pulled the victims further out to sea.

They were recovered by rescue swimmers and boats.

A 20-year-old woman was transported to the hospital by ambulance after ingesting too much water and nearly drowning. She remains in the hospital, along with a 16-year-old victim.

Most of the rescued swimmers suffered cuts and scrapes after hitting basalt stones below the surface.

The Hague police said on Thursday that the sea remains treacherous and advised swimmers to stay away from the breakwaters. The number of rescued swimmers this week has now risen to 50.
