11/12/2009Thieves steal ecstasy collector's pills

Dutch police say 2,400 tablets worth EUR 12,000 were stolen from a man whose is fascinated by the pills’ logos.

The Hague – Thieves have stolen a gigantic collection of ecstasy in the Netherlands, which was gathered by an enthusiast over two decades and carefully stored in display albums, police said Thursday.

A total of 2,400 tablets -- collected by a man who said he did not take them but was "fascinated by the pills' logos" -- were stolen from Eerbeek, in the east of the country, overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, police said.

According to De Volkskrant, the man claimed he was not a drug dealer or user.

"I've tried it before but didn't like it… My passion for collecting comes from the varied collection of colors, shapes and logos that are printed on the pills."

The pills were worth up to EUR 12,000 and arranged in around 10 display albums normally used for coins in the man's home, from where they were taken.

Police warned that they included a batch of 40 white and red tablets that could be lethal if taken. The tables also did not sport the logo usually carried by ecstasy pills.

"The collector claims that it was a hobby. He was fascinated by the pills' logos, and said he did not consume them," police spokesman Bert Top told AFP.

"He is not risking anything at the moment," he said, but added that authorities were mulling the possibility of prosecuting him.

Police added that collecting ecstasy in such a fashion was prohibited.
