01/11/2009Informant helps Dutch tax office

Deputy Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager has announced that an informant has helped the Tax Office track down hundreds of Dutch people with secret savings abroad.

The Netherlands - Deputy Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager has announced that an informant has helped the Tax Office track down hundreds of Dutch people with secret savings abroad.

On average, the savers were hiding hundreds of thousands of euros from the taxman using accounts in various European banks. In some cases, however, tens of millions of euros were involved.

Some of the people in question have already received letters asking them to explain themselves.

De Jager says many of those involved quite deliberatedly evaded tax on large sums of money. They can expect substantial retrospective tax demands plus fines of up to 300 percent.

The informant will receive a reward of several hundred thousand euros.
