05/11/2009Half of Dutch transport sector not eco-friendly

Only 49 percent of Dutch transport companies make an effort to increase the eco-friendliness of their lorries.

The Netherlands – Only half of Dutch transport companies encourage their drivers to be environmentally friendly and drive efficiently, reveals a survey published by accounting and consulting firm business advisers PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The survey which is based on 50 major Dutch transport companies shows that only 49 percent promote economic driving and are making an effort to increase the eco-friendliness of their vehicles.

With only a fifth of transport companies keeping track of their CO2 footprint, most truckers say they are not stimulated by their employers to use an economic driving style.

Economic driving includes measures such as turning your engine off if the haulier is in not moving and driving within the speed limit.

About half of the companies surveyed seem to place sustainability as the least of their concerns.

The researchers said companies should conduct business in a sustainable way as it can actually lead to considerable cost reductions.

Earlier research showed that the emission of greenhouse gases by Dutch transport companies has increased by 80 percent since 1990.
