01/02/2012EYE opening for films and the moving image in the Netherlands

EYE, the new Film Institute of the Netherlands, opens its doors to the public on Thursday, 5 April just in time for the Easter Holidays.

The building was designed by the Vienna office of Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and includes four screens with a total of 640 seats, 1,200 m² of exhibition space and a basement area where visitors can roam through the digitised collection that EYE has to offer.  There is also a museum shop offering a wide range of film-related products and a café-restaurant with a terrace facing south, offering views across the IJ.  The new building gives EYE the opportunity to expand its services as a moden film library to a wide audience.  It will be the only museum in the Netherlands focusing exclusively on film and the moving image.

The four screens will provide opportunities for extensive film programmes.  In addition to current retrospectives, themed programmes, series and viewings of restored classics and silent films with live music, there will also be contemporary arthouse films from both Dutch and international filmmakers.  The film programmes will relate to the current in-house exhibition.

Until the 8 January 2012, the EYE Film Institute was situated at  Vondelpark 3 in Amsterdam.

Annual exhibitions

From its new location, EYE plans to organise four exhibitions every year where the focus will be on the works of internationally-recognised filmmakers.  The opening exhibition, ‘Found Footage: Cinema Exposed' will show how filmmakers and artists create new works using moving images.  Participants will incliude Douglas Gordon, Bruce Conner, Aernout Mik and Matthias Müller.  The exhibition will also highlight EYE's capabilities of archiving, conserving and restoring their historical film collection.

Special attention for young visitors and students

Young visitors and students will benefit fromspecial educational programmes and films ranging from animation to the latest Dutch and international films for the family and historical silent and animation films.  Young visitors will also be able to acquaint themselves with the moving image in the basement area and in the specially-designed educational space where students and groups will be able to make their own films.

Travelling to EYE will be easy

From Amsterdam Central Station travellers can use the free 24-hour ferry service across the IJ to and from the north shore.  There will be a car park behind the EYE where there will also be plenty of space for cyclists.  In addition, EYE will have adequate facilities for disabled visitors.

EYE will be open seven days a week from 10:00. until 01:00. Monday to Friday and from 10:00. to 02:00. on Saturdays and Sundays.
