AMSTERDAM — Two people were killed and a third was injured after an explosion at the site of Dutch petroleum firm NAM in the province of Groningen on Tuesday.

The injured victim was taken to hospital suffering serious injuries. A firefighter also injured his shoulder. The dead victims are believed to be NAM staff.

Authorities were alerted to a storage tank explosion at the industrial plant in Warffum at about 9.15am. Various brigades were dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 10.30am, reducing the risk of further explosions. A gas condensate, an oil-type substance, was stored in the tank.

A crisis team was called together at the Warffum town hall. The NAM gas production site was shut down, but workers were still carrying out various tasks at the site.

The public prosecutor is leading investigations into the tragedy.
