Dutch minister talks about recognising Eid holiday

4 September 2008

THE HAGUE — Dutch Deputy Transport Minister Tineke Huizinga has said that if the proportion of Muslims in the Netherlands increases, it’s conceivable that their Eid al-Fitr festival could become a public holiday.

The three-day festival often referred to as Eid marks the end of Ramadan, with gifts for children and snacks for the sweet-toothed.

Huizinga, a member of the Christian Union party, does not think the festival should replace a Christian holiday. This year, Eid begins on 2 October.
