Switzerland in 2008 registered its biggest rise in permanent resident population in 40 years amid record immigration.

Geneva -- Switzerland in 2008 registered its biggest rise in permanent resident population in 40 years amid record immigration, Swiss authorities said Thursday.

"This growth, the most significant that has been observed since the 1960s, was essentially due to net migration," said the Swiss Federal Statistical Office in an annual report.

Total permanent resident population rose by 108,400 to 7.7 million by the end of 2008, marking a growth of 1.4 percent.

Some 90 percent or 98,200 of the demographic growth was due to migration, while natural growth comprising of births minus deaths made up the remainder.

The country registered record immigration in 2008 after the European Union and Switzerland implemented a treaty allowing EU citizens to take up jobs here without being subject to work permits.
