04/12/2008Swiss lawmakers reject ban on smacking children

Socialist MP Ruth-Gaby Vermont-Mangold who proposed the law says it’s abhorrent that the state will only intervene after a child is hit repeatedly by his parents.

4 December 2008

GENEVA – A Swiss lawmaker Wednesday called it "shameful" that parliament rejected a ban on Swiss parents smacking their children.

"It's abhorrent that we have to wait until a parent hits their children repeatedly before the authorities can intervene," said Socialist MP Ruth-Gaby Vermont-Mangold, who had proposed the law.

Lawmakers in the lower house of parliament Tuesday voted 102 to 71 against the proposal that aimed to ban corporal punishment, after it had already been rejected by the upper house.

Opponents of the law say that the Swiss constitution already gives adequate protection to children from corporal punishment.
