22/02/2008Obama Wins Democrats Abroad Global Primary

Online voting successfully enables American Democrats worldwide to participate.

22 February 2008

MADRID - Today, Democrats Abroad announced that Senator Barack Obama has won the organisation’s Global Primary.  The results were certified by the International Chair in Geneva, Switzerland.

Senator Obama received 65.6 percent of the vote in the global primary, compared to 32.7 percent for Senator Clinton. Other candidates Biden, Edwards, Kucinch and Richardson each received less than a percentage point of the vote.

The global results determine the allocation of 4.5 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention.  Senator Obama won 2.5 delegate votes, and Senator Clinton 2 delegate votes.  A further 2.5 votes will be determined at the Democrats Abroad Global Convention in April.  In addition, Democrats Abroad holds 4 superdelegate votes.

The Democrats Abroad Global Primary was conducted 5-12 February 2008.  Balloting took place at voting centres in over 30 countries, by mail and fax, and for the first time, on the internet through a secure online voting system.  Online ballots were cast from 164 countries and territories, from Antarctica to Zambia.

For the first-time ever, online voting enabled Democrats in every corner of the world to take part -- including Adam Lutchansky, a researcher at the US scientific mission at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.  "The online Democrats Abroad Global Primary expanded the frontier of voting opportunities, and it works easily, even from the harshest continent on Earth,” says Lutchansky.

The U.S. Presidential Election will take place on 4 November 2008. Deadlines for requesting overseas absentee ballots vary per state.  To vote in the U.S. Presidential Election in November, overseas voters must request a ballot from local voting authorities in the place where they last resided in the U.S., also possible at www.VoteFromAbroad.org

When you all recover from the euphoria you should start looking closely at what Obama really stands for and who his supporters are (large unions opposed to free trade and extreme left wing organizations like MoveOn.org etc.). He claims to reach across the political divide but he has a voting record in Congress of being very extreme. He doesn't reach out to moderates or conservatives despite his claims to the contrary. All politicians should be subjected to proper scrutiny be he won't even give clear answers to Hilary Clinton's questions so just wait until the Republican attacks begin. Remember that the President doesn't pass laws, the congress does so it is a bit unclear as to how the large spending proposals will be passed into law. There is a long way to go before we reach a decision in November.

Yes, I certainly agree with Tony McCuaig's post. As much as I was enthusiastic in seeing Obama win his Senate seat in 2004, I'm frankly concerned that he lacks both substance and experience to the extent that he could add more instability to the already fragile world political situation.

Obama talks 'Change' but how do we know that this is not code for a Second American Revolution? His obvious vagueness allows many voters the opportunity to fill in their own private scenario any way that they wish!

Sorry, but B.O. is just too cleverly packaged to be sufficiently believable and trustworthy to be the Democratic Party's next Presidential Nominee.

Hopefully, if he really can be objective about himself and the future of the U.S. and the rest of the world, Obama will be able to see that choosing for the Vice Presidential nominee with Senator Clinton as the Presidential one is in the best interest for us all.

Sure enough that Obama may or maynot deliver the change that his followers are hoping for. But one thing is for sure McCain and Clinton, will not be much different from Bush, whom as far as I am concerned sold Americans Rights and the Constitution down the river for the Illusion of safety from terrorists. My fear is that Obama will cop-out and just be a black version of Bush.
I and many Americans want a real change from the last 7 years, not more of the same American double-speak on Rights, Constitution, and torture that is not torture unless done to an American soldier by a terrorist.

In reply to D. Watson: Didn't Lincoln sell(suspend) American Rights and the Constitution down the river to keep the Union together? Does that make him "bad" like Bush?
