04/01/2013Two die from self-immolation in Spain: hospital

Two men in Spain died Friday from their burns after setting themselves on fire, at least one of them because of money problems, hospital sources said.

Aged 57 and 63, both set themselves alight in the southern city of Malaga, reports said.

El Mundo newspaper cited a witness as saying the 57-year-old man was unemployed and had money problems.

A second man aged 63 was in the same hospital after also setting himself on fire in Malaga, in what police said appeared to be a suicide attempt.

Police gave no details of the identity of the second man, whom police found near a burning car under a highway on Thursday.

Over recent months media have also reported a handful of suicides of people facing eviction in Spain's recession.

Madrid has launched an unprecedented austerity drive to tackle record deficits.

Protests are growing as people decry an economic slump, unemployment and a series of austerity measures adopted by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's right-leaning government. Massive aid to a bad loan-ridden and widely scorned banking sector has stirred further anger.

Millions of jobs have been destroyed since a property market crash and a global financial crisis rocked the economy in 2008.
