08/06/2011Spain award goes to humanitarian entrepreneur

An American who helps entrepreneurs to tackle the world's social problems, Bill Drayton, won Spain's prestigious Prince of Asturius Award on Wednesday.

Drayton, the 67-year-old founder and head of Ashoka, a global group that acts like a venture fund investing in entrepreneurs who have projects to help society, won the 2011 award for international cooperation.

Ashoka, based in Arlington, Virginia, also helps social entrepreneurs to collaborate and tries to provide them with the right framework, for example by ensuring access to financing.

"Bill Drayton has generated a platform of citizens who, via their projects, have changed the way of solving society's problems," the Prince of Asturius jury said in a statement.

Each of the Prince of Asturias awards, which date back to 1981, is endowed with 50,000 euros ($73,000), a commissioned sculpture donated by Joan Miro, a diploma and an insignia.
