Analysis of the remains of victims of the rail accident in northeastern Spain Thursday revealed that 13 people died in the tragedy, a regional official said.

Authorities had earlier put the death toll at 12 from the accident, in which an express train slammed into a group of young revellers crossing the tracks to get to a beach party.

The impact of the collision mutilated the bodies of the victims.

The justice minister of the northeastern region of Catalonia, Montserrat Tura, said that, after examining the remains, forensic experts had determined that 13 people were killed.

She said eight of the bodies -- those of a young woman and seven men -- had been identified.

Fourteen people were also injured in the accident in the Castelldefels Playa station, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) south of Barcelona.
