20/05/2009Two detained in Spain for bullfighting scam

Spanish polices have detained two con artists who told immigrants they could get them jobs as bullfighters in exchange for EUR 4,000.

Madrid – Spanish police said Tuesday they had detained two men who scammed would-be immigrants from Colombia by falsely offering them jobs in Spain as bullfighters in exchange for around EUR 4,000.

The two, a Spanish bullfighting businessman and a Colombian matador's assistant, offered employment as matadors or matadors' assistants, police said in a statement. Their victims included hairdressers and IT experts, it added.

"These alleged jobs never existed," it said.

Police launched their operation at the end of April after receiving a complaint from a Colombian woman came to Spain to take up a job promised by the two in exchange for EUR 4,000 (USD 5,400) which did not exist.

The two men, aged 38 and 42, face illegal immigration and fraud charges.
