02/06/2009Swine flu hits secondary school in Spain

Two children – a pair of siblings – have been diagnosed with swine flu while 42 others are placed under observation.

Madrid – Two children at a secondary school near Madrid have been diagnosed with swine flu and a further 42 are under observation due to suspicions they have contracted the disease, local authorities said Monday.

The Isaac Albeniz school in the town of Leganes was closed until at least Tuesday following the news, said the regional education official for the Madrid region, Lucia Figar.

Notices about swine flu were also posted in other schools in the town.

The two confirmed cases were a brother and sister, said regional health director Juan Jose Guemes.

He said the girl "travelled to the United States where it seems she contracted the flu before infecting her brother," he said.

Spanish authorities earlier this month quarantined two military establishments after an outbreak in which 20 soldiers were infected.

Spain was the first European country to confirm a case of the A(H1N1) virus, and the World Health Organisation said Monday there now are 178 confirmed cases of the disease in the country.

It said swine flu had infected 17,410 people in 62 countries since it was first reported in April in Mexico and the United States. It said 115 people have died of the virus.
