22/03/2009Spanish police detain 27 suspected drug traffickers

Police in Spain said Saturday they had seized 3.5 tonnes of hashish and arrested 27 suspected traffickers in three separate operations.

MADRID - Police in the northeastern region of Catalonia broke up a drug trafficking gang that was also involved in the distribution of counterfeit bills, arresting 23 north Africans and seizing EUR 260,000 in cash and 224 kilogrammes (493 pounds) of hashish.

Another operation, in the southern Costa del Sol region, led to the arrest of a Frenchman and an Italian and the seizure of 2.1 tonnes of hashish, EUR 120,000 in cash and several weapons.

Police off Spain's Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco, also arrested two people and seized 1.2 tonnes of hashish on a motorised dinghy.

Spain is one of the main points of entry of drugs into Europe, from hashish that has been grown in north Africa to Latin American cocaine which is often smuggled in via Africa.

Spanish authorities seized more than 100 tonnes of hashish last year.
