More than 2,000 Spanish journalists have lost their jobs since June 2008 and are appealing to the European Union to release funds to help the sector.

MADRID – A Spanish journalists' association Monday called for financial help for the country's press industry, where thousands have been laid off amid the economic crisis.

Between June 2008 and this month, 2,221 Spanish journalists have lost their jobs, the Federation of Journalist Associations in Spain (FAPE) said.

It backed an appeal to the European Union by the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) to release funds to help the sector.

Spanish media has been hard hit by the economic crisis, suffering a sharp drop in advertising revenue. Some publications, like the free daily Metro, have been forced to close down while others, such as ABC and El Periodico, have announced staff reduction plans.

The country's top-selling newspaper, El Pais, late last month announced a rise of 9.0 percent in the price of its Monday to Saturday editions to EUR 1.20.

Spanish journalists staged a demonstration in Madrid in February to protest soaring unemployment in the industry, with one association predicting a loss of 5,000 jobs in the sector.

Spain's unemployment rate hit 15.5 percent in February, the highest level in the 27-nation European Union and nearly double the average of 7.9 percent for the entire bloc.
