17/05/2009Spain bars party thought linked to Basque separatists

Spain's supreme court decided Saturday to disqualify an extreme-left group thought to be linked to Basques separatists from running in next month's European elections, a spokesman said.

MADRID - Spain's supreme court decided Saturday to disqualify an extreme-left group thought to be linked to Basques separatists from running in next month's European elections, a spokesman said.

The government and the prosecution service had called for a ban on the list named Internationalist Initiative, saying it was controlled by Batasuna, the banned political wing of the armed separatist group ETA.

Batasuna, banned since 2003 and with most of its leadership in jail, has had alleged proxies barred by the courts from running in the municipal elections of 2007, the legislatives of 2008 and the regional polls earlier this year.

The supreme court's judges voted early Saturday by 11 to five to exclude Internationalist Initiative from the June 7 European elections and were to meet later in the day to formalise the ruling.

ETA, considered a terrorist organisation by both the European Union and the United States, has killed 825 people in Spain in its 41-year campaign of bombings and shootings for an independent Basque homeland.

Batasuna was banned for failing to condemn ETA's violent tactics.
