Spain on Wednesday banned ten top officials of Honduras' de facto government from entering the country following the ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya in a coup in June.

Madrid - Spain on Wednesday banned ten top officials of Honduras' de facto government from entering the country following the ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya in a coup in June.

Among those barred from entering the country is Honduras's defence minister Adolfo Lionel Sevilla, interior minister Oscar Raul Matute, and finance minister Jose Rosario Bonnano Zaldivar, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Also banned from entering Spain is the president of Honduras' Supreme Court Jorge Alberto Rivera Aviles.

The de facto regime took power after ousting and exiling the president in a June coup ordered by the Honduras supreme court that has been condemned by the European Union and the United States.

Since the coup, the United States has cut off aid to Honduras -- the EU has suspended aid to its institutions but not humanitarian aid to its people -- while Brazil has suspended visa-free travel for all its people.

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, a Nobel Peace laureate, been acting as crisis mediator in an effort to bring Honduras, a former Spanish colony, back from the brink of civil war.

"The Spanish government reiterates its support for the mediation work being carried out by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias and hopes that these measures contribute to the reestablishment of constitutional normality in Honduras," the foreign ministry statement said.
