25/06/2009Spain reports two cases of swine on cruise ship

Spain reported two cases of swine flu on a cruise liner docked in Mediterranean port of Barcelona.

Madrid – Spain Wednesday reported two cases of swine flu on a cruise liner docked in Mediterranean port of Barcelona.

The two women -- an American and an Italian -- have been isolated on board the ship of the Royal Caribbean company, the health ministry said.

Spanish media said around 3,000 passengers are on the liner, which arrived in Barcelona from the French port of Nice and is scheduled to leave late Wednesday for Palma, capital of the Spanish Balearic island of Majorca.

Earlier this month, a Spanish cruise ship was turned away from three Caribbean islands after swine flu cases emerged among the crew.

In its latest bulletin issued Wednesday, the World Health Organisation said swine flu has infected 55,867 people in 109 countries and territories and killed 238 people since late March.

Spain was the first European country to confirm a case of the A(H1N1) virus, and is second only to Britain in the total number of cases in the continent.

The health ministry said Wednesday there are 541 confirmed cases in the country.
