10/07/2009Second swine flu death on Spanish island

A 41-year-old man suffering from a chronic disease is the second person in Spain to die from the A(H1N1) virus.

Madrid –  A man died of swine flu Thursday on the Spanish tourist island of Gran Canaria, the second person to die in Spain from the A(H1N1) virus, the health ministry told AFP.

"The man is 41 years old and had been suffering from a chronic disease," a ministry spokesman said. He was taken to Gran Canaria's University Hospital on Sunday.

Regional health ministry official Maria Mercedes Roldos would not give details to respect his family's wishes.

A 20-year-old Moroccan woman who was seven months pregnant became the first Spanish swine flu death in Madrid on June 30.

Doctors managed to save her baby who was not infected by the virus.

According to health ministry figures, Spain has 969 confirmed cases of swine flu, some of them serious, but most of them were not serious as "most patients are recovering within a few days".

Younger people were the most affected group so far.

As of Thursday, the World Health Organisation has counted 94,512 people infected, with 429 dead worldwide.
