Morocco's king will charter a plane to repatriate the body of a baby boy who died in Madrid due to a medical error shortly after his Moroccan mother became Spain's first swine flu victim.

Madrid – Morocco's king will charter a plane to repatriate the body of a baby boy who died in Madrid due to a medical error after his Moroccan mother died from swine flu, embassy officials said Tuesday.

"His Majesty Mohammed VI has followed the case since yesterday, and by royal order, a plane will come here to transfer the remains as well as family members," a spokesman for the embassy told AFP.

The infant boy, named Rayan, was delivered 29 June on his Moroccan mother's 20th birthday via Cesarean section as the 28-week-pregnant woman's condition worsened. She died the next day, becoming Spain's first swine flu fatality.

Medical tests determined Rayan was not infected with the A(H1N1) virus which claimed the life of his mother, identified as Dalila Mimouni.

He died on Monday after a young nurse with no experience in neonatal care made the mistake of feeding him intravenously instead of with a tube inserted through the nose as premature babies should be, hospital officials said.

"The hospital assumes all responsibility," the director of Madrid's Gregorio Maranon hospital, Antonio Barba, told a news conference, calling it a "terrible medical mistake." The nurse has been suspended pending an investigation.

The family of the woman had already criticised the hospital for sending her home twice last month when she sought treatment for fever and respiratory trouble before finally diagnosing her as having swine flu.

Hospital officials said at the time that her pregnancy had made it harder to detect the virus.

A 41-year-old man became the second person to die in Spain from the virus on Thursday at a hospital in the Canary Islands.

There are more than 1,000 confirmed cases of swine flu in Spain, according to the health ministry.
