27/07/2009Missing Spanish climber in Himalayas feared dead

A 47-year-old climber who tried to reach the peak of the 8,035-metre-high Gasherbrum II mountain has not been seen since Monday.

Madrid – A Spanish climber who has disappeared on the slopes of Gasherbrum II mountain in the Himalayas is feared dead, Spanish media reported Sunday.

Luis Maria Barbero, 47, has not been seen since Monday as he tried to reach the peak of the 8,035-metre (26,362-foot) high mountain located on the border of Pakistan and China, daily El Pais reported citing a member of his climbing team.

"Given the amount of time that has gone by, the rough weather conditions and the state of the mountain, we have given Luis up for dead," Marta Alejandre told the top-selling newspaper.

Barbero decided to pursue his attempt to climb the mountain, one of only 14 in the world above 8,000 metres, despite harsh weather conditions. She added that he decided to continue even though another group of Iranian climbers who he had accompanied turned back.

The last death of a Spanish climber in the Himalayas occurred in May 2008 when veteran climber Inaki Ochoa de Olza died on the slopes of the 8,091-metre high Annapurna mountain after suffering a brain injury.
