01/07/2009King says all countries against Honduras coup

King Juan Carlos has said that all countries are opposed to the military coup that toppled Honduran President.

Madrid – Spain's King Juan Carlos has said that all countries are opposed to the military coup that toppled Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, newspaper El Pais reported Tuesday.

"You have already seen how all countries have reacted. We are all against" the coup, the king told the paper Monday as he left a ceremony at a military training centre in Madrid.

He made the brief comments after previously saying that he would not respond to "political questions", El Pais said.

Zelaya, who had been in power since 2006, was ousted Sunday when troops bundled him out of bed in pajamas and whisked him away to Costa Rica.

He had been planning a referendum on changing the constitution to allow him to run for a second term in November elections.

The coup has drawn international criticism, with the United States and European Union among those to condemn it.
