Millions of dollars of illegal drugs were uncovered among pineapples in the biggest drug bust for more than 15 years.

Berlin -- German customs stumbled across 28 million euros (37 million dollars) worth of illegal drugs hidden amongst seven tonnes of pineapples in Hamburg harbour, officials said on Wednesday.

"While unloading a ship from Ghana, we came across a container full of pineapples meant to be delivered to a fashion boutique in Western Germany," custom official, Dietmar Schulze told AFP.

"It seemed bizarre that a clothing store would order 15 tonnes of pineapples so we launched an investigation."

Scanning and searching the container revealed that it contained five and a half tonnes of marihuana as well as 18 kilograms (40 pounds) of hashish -- both preparations of cannabis.

Schulze said it was the biggest drug bust for more than 15 years in Europe's second largest port.

Although the container already arrived in December, the case had not been made public because it involved a complex network of drug-dealers from Germany, Britain and other European countries, Schulze said.

"Although investigations are still underway, we have managed to bust the drug gang and have arrested the German dealer who was at the helm of the group," he added.

Last week, a supermarket saleswoman stumbled upon 28 kilograms (60 pounds) of cocaine worth over a million euros (dollars) while unpacking boxes of bananas in southern Germany.
