Viewers will notice a drop in advertisements on the two public television channels in the coming months before it totally disappears on 1 January 2010.

Madrid – Advertisements on Spain's two public television channels will be switched off at the start of next year, the country's public broadcaster said Tuesday.

Luis Fernandez, president of broadcaster RTVE, said viewers would notice a marked drop from October before advertising totally disappear from screens on 1 January 2010.

The two public channels, TVE1 and TVE2, currently broadcast 10 minutes of adverts an hour.

There would be "a significant reduction of advertising space in the coming months of October, November and December" by around 50 percent, Fernandez told a parliamentary commission overseeing RTVE.

Spain's ruling Socialist Party introduced a bill to axe advertising on the public channels in May and the measure was approved by the country's Senate in July.

Spain's private channels are rubbing their hands in anticipation of the advertising axe on the public channels.

They hope the move will help them win back ad revenue which has been slashed by the country's brutal recession.
