MADRID — Around 30 percent of children in Spain drop out of school before the age of 16, a report released on Tuesday found.
Spain has the highest level in Europe of pupils failing to complete their basic education, according to the study by the Organisation for Economic Development (OECD), a Paris-based think-tank.
It was also the worst figure among countries in the 'old' European Union of 15 nations.
Alejandro Tiana, Spanish education secretary, said after hearing the results of the report: "Even though the siuation has got better, it is still the worst in the EU."
The average figure for pupils not finishing school at 16 was 12 percent.
