MADRID — A group of football hooligans invaded the training ground of Atletico Madrid and hurled insults at the players and training staff.

The Atletico Madrid 'ultras' broke into the ground and surrounded the players, calling them 'mercenaries' and 'clowns'.

Guardia Civil officers had to be called to escort the players away from the training ground in Majadahonda, near Madrid.

Meanwhile, Osasuna, another football club from north-western Spain, asked the Spanish Football Association to change the location of the Royal Cup Final next month, Spain's equivalent of the English FA Cup Final.

It followed messages on a website from groups of neo-Nazi fans of Athletico Madrid and Real Madrid, making threats against the Osasuna players.

The unrest amongst fans of Atlético Madrid followed a series of setbacks suffered by the club in La Liga.
