AMSTERDAM – Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin announced in a meeting with Parliament on Thursday that a national expertise centre on honour killings will soon be established. The special team of the Haaglanden regional police that deals with honour killings, the MEP, will be expanded to create this kind of office.
The MEP unit (multi ethnic police work) has played a leading role over the past few years in the approach to honour killing and other forms of honour-related crime. The Council of Head Commissioners has responded positively to the plan to open a national expertise centre for this purpose, Hirsch Ballin said.
Aa coordinator for honour-related crime will also be appointed on every police corps. Studies show that the complex character of these crimes makes registering them difficult.
A special search machine will also be set up for the police force to screen files using indicators that are related to honour crime, the minister said.
