04/09/2007Gored bullfighter makes speedy recovery

4 September 2007

MADRID -(AFP) - Jose Tomas, who stepped out of retirement earlier this year to return to the bullfighting ring, only to be gored last week at Linares, left hospital Monday in Malaga after making a good recovery from multiple injuries sustained.

The tauropress specialist news agency reported that Tomas, considered one of the brighest stars of Spanish bullfighting in recent years, was released following a statement issued by doctors treating him at the El Angel clinic in Malaga.

"His general state of health is satisfactory," the statement said.

Tomas had only returned to the ring this season after four years in semi-retirement in Mexico and the Linares venue in the deep south was packed last Wednesday when he was gored.

Ironically, he was competing as part of celebrations to remember "Manolete," who was fatally gored in his right thigh 60 years earlier to the day and who died of his injuries.
