18/11/2008Women on the frontline

Women on the frontline The United Nations warmly welcomes you to the screening of three films from the gripping series Women on the frontline.

It threatens the lives of more young women than cancer, malaria or war. It affects one in three women worldwide and leaves them
mentally scarred for life. It is usually inflicted by a family member.

‘It’ is violence against women and girls. The series, Women on the Frontline, takes the front to the homes, villages, and cities of our world where a largely unreported war against females is being waged.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, rape is a weapon of war; in Mauritania we ask if the movement to abandon harsh interpretations of Sharia can succeed; and in Austria we find a law showing violent men ‘the Red card’.

Women on the frontline
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the United Nations warmly welcomes you to the screening of three films from the gripping series Women on the frontline.

The films (each 22 minutes long) feature issues of violence against women in different countries: “Find a Word For It” by Kristen Sellefyan, about the Democratic Republic of the Congo, “Showing the Red Card” by Patrick Bürge, about Austria, and “A Question of Rape” by Kim Hopkins, about Mauritania. The films will be followed by a discussion with Ms. Miriam Schär, Advisor at the Domestic Abuse Intervention Centre in Vienna, and Dr. Margaret Agama, UNFPA Representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

After the discussion refreshments will be served.
